The word fiction is derived from the Latin word fashioned which is defined as:

‘’A kind of work in any language that is not patterned in meter ‘’

Fiction is an imaginative work it is used in writing the novel and short stories.

                  ‘’Short story is a newly introduced genre of fiction.’’

Fiction is the most popular form of literature nowadays. teaching fiction is comparatively not as difficult as in poetry. only imaginative and creative thinking is needed to write good fiction.

The teacher should create interest among the students. He should tell them about the objectives of teaching prose fiction. these objectives include:

  • To produce creativity and habit of thinking in the target language,

  • To motivate them what they want to write.

  • To introduce the interest of the students to appropriate pieces of literary writing.

  • To let the hidden literary qualities of the student come out.

The teacher will tell the student about the types of fiction

Types of fiction in English literature



Some kinds of fiction are as under:

  1. Fairy tale:

In such a type of fiction, the characters have magical abilities or superhuman qualities. Usually, the title is shone between the good and evil characters. the plot leads the story to ultimate defeat by the evil force.

     2. Historical fiction:

Its characters are taken from the famous and celebrated figures of the past. its plot consists of real events of history mixed with functional touch.

    3.Mystery:

Its character has a mysterious bearing. The plot is laid in such a way to solve some mystery or puzzle. Its setting is lifelike and put mystically.

    4.Fantasy:

 The characters of such fictional prose are super Human or magical. Their qualities are     beyond the understanding of man's setting is posed to be natural but has fantastic and       sometimes unbelievable events.

    5.Fable:

Characters of fictional prose may be presented as animals with human qualities. Its theme gives a moral lesson. Its setting is different from all other genres of fiction.

Elements of fiction:

Like drama, fiction also contains some elements which are as follows:

  1. Plot:

The plot can be defined as:

''The arrangements of events and incidents in a logical sequence.''


''Aristotle'' calls it:

''The life and soul of the tragedy''
 plot of fiction are also well-knit as is in drama. Internal and external conflicts usually promote the plot. Internal conflicts are present in the minds of humans. Whereas external conflicts are generated between individuals and their relations to other things or afterworld.

    2.Characterization:

''An act of describing the qualities or character of someone.''


Character are those for whom the story takes place. They may be humans, animals, and superhuman forces. Characters may be further two categories:

  • Flat character
  • Round character

Flat character:

''The flat character remains unchanged during the plot.''


Round character:

The round character begins to twist and turn. They are responsible to generate the rise and fall in the story.


    3.Themes:

''A particular subject or idea on which the style of something is based.''

The theme is the real idea or a story. there is a variety of themes like love, hatred, religion, nature, society and human conflicts, etc.

   4.Setting:

''A place or type of surrounding where an event takes place.''


Setting includes several closely related aspects of a work of fiction. It involves time, place, manner, accent, and moral values of character. The environment of scenery also affects the whole atmosphere of the setting.

   5.Diction:

''The choice and use of words and phrases in speech or writing.''


The charm of beauty can only be created by the right selection of appropriate words.

Conclusion:

Summing up the topic we can say that teaching fiction requires a proficient teacher. The teacher should suggest something interesting fiction like a short story. He should give them different genres of literary books, the teacher should tell the students about various myths related to the various cultures.

They should use innovative techniques for teaching specific novels and stories
