Difference between Approach Method and Teaching

The aim of a good teacher is effective teaching. It yields good results and creates an understanding of new concepts. It is well planned and systematic. It follows some specific methods and employs the best available techniques. For becoming a good teacher, one is curious to know what methods are available and what are the best techniques? The question also arises whether there is some difference between an approach, method, and technique. We can describe these points as follows

  • Approach

  • Method

  • Technique

Approach

An approach is a set of theories are principles that our teacher may have in mind about the philosophy of language learning and teaching.

Method

A method is a general process of creative interaction between the subject matter offered by the school and the students. It has an established sequence of doing something, we can say

  • A method is a planned effort.

  • It has an established sequence.

  • It has also an established relationship among different parts.

  • It is a way of including the interaction between the subject matter and the students.

Technique

A technique means one single procedure used in a classroom. It is a particular strategy or device used to achieve an immediate result. A method will consist of several techniques. In contrast to the method, a technique is a very limited activity that includes reaction but does not go further in a continuum. Various techniques can be used in the teaching method. According to the dictionary of education, the technique is a way of doing things that can be repeated again and again. A technique can be a process of doing things. It can be a way of manipulating things or it can be a procedure for completing some work.

Conclusion

Simply we can say that an approach is a set of theories or principles and a method is a whole And a technique is a part. The whole consists of many such parts. A method is planned the use of the technique is seldom planned.

THE INAATE THEORY OR MENTALISTIC THEORY

The Innate theory or Mentalistic theory   The innate theory of language learning was put forward by the most distinguished 20th-century linguist called  ''Noam Chomsky'' . This is also known as the ''mentalistic theory'' or ''nature theory''. This theory is best understood in contrast with the '' Behavioristic '' or '' Nurture theory'' of language learning. The behavioristic theory was put forward by '' Skinner'' in his book work '' Verbal Behavior'' . It is based on the s timulus-response- reinforcement- repetition process. This theory emphasizes the preexistence of an ideal social environment for the learning of one’s mother tongue. It is maintained that language is a sort of behavior that we acquire in ideal socio conditions. The behaviorists do not believe that the child has a separate language learning capability. It was in reaction to this theory that Chomsky came

The direct method

The direct method The general dissatisfaction with the grammar-translation method gave birth to the direct method of teaching. This method claims to teach a foreign language without the use of a mother tongue. It is based on the natural approach that learning a foreign language is the same as learning the mother tongue naturally without the help of any written rules. Its two major aims are: to think in the target language and to speak it with the correct pronunciation. In short, it aims at establishing a direct bond between thought and expression, between experience and language. This method works on four principles; No translation under any circumstances. A strong emphasis on Oral work. Avoidance of grammatical explanation for stop. Maximum use of question-answer techniques Advantages of the direct method: 1.  Natural method: The child learns first by listening and speaking. This method lays stress on this natural way of learning language skills. 2. Fluency in speech: Through exces
